With another year of facing a number of trials and tribulations, it can be easy for humanity to lose sight of the simpler things that are taken for granted. As we close out 2021, we might find ourselves more distracted than ever; absently scrolling through our phones, while the TV buzzes in the background, never fully paying attention to our surroundings because there is just so much noise. Our animal friends, however, are moving along with their eyes on the prize; adapting while acting natural, remaining fully cognizant of their environment, and just going with the flow. After viewing these pictures, you’ll think to yourself, “hey, I could learn a thing or two from these creatures.” We’re not so different after all, you know!

Polar Bears know how to pal around

If you have siblings or a best friend from the neighborhood where you grew up, you might fondly remember the first snow of the season. The snow packs tight, and you bust out your sleigh or start packing some snowballs. You’d run around outside until your cheeks were pink, and maybe your roughhousing went a little too far. These bear cubs are enjoying the same activities that we do as they playfully barrel down the hill and maybe collide a little too hard together. While the cubs may miss out on the hot cocoa, maybe we’re missing out on some of the winter fun we tend to neglect as we get older.

Cold blooded creatures share a warm embrace

Our amphibian friends share shelter under a flower while they wait for the storm to break. While the environment may sometimes be tumultuous, and the sky dark, sometimes it just takes the comfort of a friend or partner to help weather the storm. It can’t rain all the time, but when it does, we can get by with a little help from our friends.

Never be afraid to show your true colors

While we differ greatly from the entire gamut of avian creatures, they sure know how to strut their stuff. Whether their posture is for attracting a mate, feeding their young, or fighting off a predator, we are taught that a little confidence can go a long way. While we’ve all faced uncertainties, birds like the Mandarin Duck and Keel Billed Toucan remind us that if you stand straight and show your true colors

The majestic mane of the mighty Lion;

If one word could be used to describe the lion, it would be “stoic.” The leader of a lion pack is fearless, decisive, brave, and loyal. There is an old proverb that states, “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion.” While we don’t mean to be throwing shade at the sheep, the saying does powerfully demonstrate the lion’s greater qualities that we could all strive to duplicate.

The introverted qualities of the Red Panda

Sometimes the urge to say what’s on our minds is overwhelming, but sometimes it’s better to sit back, and wait for the right time to speak. The Red Panda is lesser known than the black and white pandas we’re used to seeing because they’re a little more elusive, and a little more solitary. While more closely related to raccoons than Pandas, they are okay with the lone endeavor, and maybe a little bit of self-reflection. It’s easy to compare how they hang out on a high and thick branch to reading a book on your windowsill.

Elephants walk the infinite horizon

Sometimes the best way to live life is by continuing to move forward. Elephants walking across the plains are an example of this sentiment. Side by side, they can weather the heat and terrain. While it’s true that elephants have a fantastically long memory, they still set their gazes straight ahead as they step toward the future with each heavy stride.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but the squirrel still prospers.

Sometimes we all just need to sit back, relax, and smell the roses. Or maybe they’re dandelions. The point is, that it’s easy to rush through things. The squirrel isn’t innocent in this, but they also know how to savor the moment. Life is full of cheap thrills and small pleasures, and the squirrel has a firm grasp on this concept.

Known to graze in large groups, the highland cows have a strong sense of community. While 2021 has kept a lot of us socially distant and separated from our loved ones, the Highland Cows have been wholly unaffected. While it can be easy to be jealous of their inseparable bond, it’s also easy to feel a warmth in your heart knowing that some bonds really can’t be broken.

Travel is a touchy subject these days. While it may seem impossible to get out there and see the world with some of the travel restrictions these last couple of years, there are still areas of the world that are either remote enough, or still safe to travel on a solo trip or with a companion. While a global pandemic has made a lot of us think about all the catastrophes in the world, we wanted to show you some of the beauty that is still happening all around us. All one has to do is look for it. If a busy life is keeping you from filling up your passport, these photos will still take you to another place.

A known fact is that the different shades of lilac represent different things. White lilacs represent purity and innocence, while a more purple hue represents spirituality. If you’re looking for something light and sweet, like a sugar dusted confection, then you’ll want to take in a breath of fresh lilac

Maybe you’re looking for something that’s not quite rural, but a little further removed from the suburbs. The Cotswolds, in South-Central England is home to a number of small cottages that oversee rolling hills and rivers. What sounds better than hiding away in a small cozy village, but also having the comfort of being able to get into town for supplies. Buses run through the roadways, but some are infrequent. So if you’re looking for a secluded getaway, then look no further.

The power of the Atlantic in Iceland

Melville once said that when he finds himself growing “grim about the mouth,” and feeling the urge to “knock people’s hats off,” he “quietly takes to the sea.” While he wasn’t talking about Iceland in Moby Dick, it’s clear what he was talking about. Much like outer space, the sea is monolithic, awe inspiring, and seemingly endless. Is there a better place to lose yourself than the sea? The same waters that preceded us, will be here long after we’re gone. It’s humbling to stare out into the endless rolling waves, and watch them crash into themselves in harmonious vibration.

Halfway between Norway and Iceland isn’t just flyover territory

The Faroe Islands are home to many spectacular views, and not so densely populated. While the climate is on the cooler side, one could always dress in layers because the hiking is primo. Or maybe you’re not about exerting yourself, and you just want to take in some views. There is something awe inspiring about looking down on a village from the coastal cliffs as you find a good place to sit and watch the day pass you by.

Who said the trees couldn’t be made of gold?

The Ginko tree is a reminder that while the world can sometimes feel gray, there is still a vibrancy that won’t quit. The Zhongnan Mountains in China are the home to the golden tree of the Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple. Some say that a tree can seem like the highest form of consciousness. They’re not wrong to think that. Imagine sitting in the same place for over 1400 years. Gives you a lot of time to think.

When the foundation is the side of a mountain

This Greek Orthodox monastery is located in the Pontic Mountains in Turkey. The structures are sturdy but seem impossible. Not only are you overlooking the Altindere valley, but the monastery itself is a marvel in and of itself. The architecture alone makes your head spin when you realize the engineering that went into building a temple on the side of a mountain.

Whether you’re on a guided tour with friends on an offroad vehicle, staying at a small hotel, or renting a room and having breakfast with a local, you’ll be sure to find yourself at home during your visit to Brazil.

Jalapao State Park

Located in the North of Brazil, Jalapao has legally been considered a state park since 2001. The fact that Jalapao State Park is a relatively new destination makes it somewhat unknown to the masses. However, as reports of the beauty and the tranquility have been made by avid travelers who have since become enamored with Jalapao State Park, the tourism numbers have increased and helped with the development of the area. While there has been talk of paving over some of the dirt trails, it has been debated by environmentalists whether or not this would be good for the habitat. Presently, off-road vehicles are needed to get around Jalapao. With over 400 miles to cover, you’ll travel from sand dune, to waterfall, to natural springs with the clearest sparkling water you’ve ever seen.

Take a dip

The most known attraction in Jalapao State Park is the fervedouro. A fervedouro is a spring formed from underground rivers of bright blue water. The pressure from the rivers makes it almost impossible to submerge in the water, and you will remain afloat despite your weight. Imagine being your own life raft floating atop a tranquil lake in the middle of paradise. You can try to dig your toes into the sand below, but they won’t stay buried for long. If you’re wondering what the most perfect part about the fervedouro is, it’s the temperature. The water holds steady at around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

A place to rest your head

Since we’re in such a rugged area that’s barely been developed, there is not a lot of infrastructure in the neighboring cities. This is especially true during the peak tourist seasons like spring break and summer vacation. While you may be able to book yourself at a small hotel, some avid travelers recommend finding a room to rent from one of the locals. Not only will you have a place to stay, they will treat you like family, and you’ll likely share a table for meals. You’ll likely be eating homemade traditional Brazilian food containing rice, beans, chicken, and vegetables.

A healthy disconnect

One thing to note is that cell phone and internet service is minimal at Jalapao State Park. While it’s encouraged to just out down your device and live in the moment, it is also wise to try to make arrangements to communicate long distance in case of emergency. In the meantime, you can float in the springs with a full belly and a clear head as you drift off on sparkling water that feels like it’s from a bottle of Perrier.

To describe the sensory experience of Wadi Rum, Jordan will require you to suspend a substantial amount of disbelief. How an area so terrestrial could have such a Martian feel to it can make you wonder about your origin as you feast your eyes upon the cliff formations from the valley where you stand. What initially appears to be a slightly heightened plateau from a distance reveals itself to be a monolithic feat of Earth’s naturally proficient engineering. Panorama from the depth of your vantage point will seem endless, but you’ll also feel small without feeling insignificant. The vast expanse of the scenery will swallow you whole, but you’ll know right where you are. Red sand will sink beneath your feet on the inclines, but you will feel so deeply rooted that you won’t be worried about sinking.

Rock Climbing

If your calf muscles are eager for a challenge, then you’re in luck. Rock formations jut out of the ground in a multitude of formations; inclines range from a gradual climb to cliffs at a sharp 90 degree angle. From whatever skill level you may be, you can feast your eyes at the glory and splendor of Wadi Rum from above, whatever the climb of your choosing may be. Endless horizons will make you question your own senses as you try to calculate the vastness of it all.

The Desert Sky

You might find yourself wandering through the desert using the sun as your compass, only to be met with streaks of cumulus clouds that trail off endlessly. Sure, you’re oh so far away from your hometown's annual carnival, but the delicate precipitous ballet soaring above you reminds you of cotton candy from the fairgrounds of your youth. You try to reach out and grab a piece, but you know it’s impossible. Silly as this may seem, you can’t blame yourself for trying.

You’ll be led to believe that you’re bunking at a space station on Mars in comparison to your usual inland hotel. As you feast your eyes upon the myriad flora and fauna by the likes of which you’ve never seen, you will find yourself losing count of all the endemic species you come across. You are far from home, but you feel awake. You’re weary from your travels, yes, but the raw beauty of the nature surrounding you will replenish you as you explore a place that appears to have never been touched by another human. You’ve discovered your own Garden of Eden, and the unspoiled beauty doesn’t seem real, but rather like a beautifully lit lucid dream.

Endemic Biodiversity

There’s no mystery as to why Socotra is often referred to as the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean.” Hundreds of flora and fauna are endemic to the island, and you will only be able to see them here. Unique species of reptiles, birds, spiders, and scorpions alike have made their home on this island, and there are no known duplicates anywhere else in the world. Because of the delicate ecosystem, it is encouraged to travel with as light of a footprint as possible. While tourism is on the rise, education of the ecosystem may not catch up as quickly with the increasing number of travelers. As a tourist, it is your responsibility to help keep Socotra as untouched as it needs to be to maintain balance.

The Shade of Dragon’s Blood

Known for its crimson sap, the Dragon’s Blood tree can only be found in Socotra, Yemen. Boasting tall branches that resemble an inverted umbrella high up above the roots, the Dragon’s Blood tree provides shade from its imposing height. The tallest of the elder evergreens are as old as 800 years. The tree’s design of survival inspires awe as it majestically overlooks the gorge below. Its blood colored sap has been once thought to have healing properties. While mostly used for digestive issues, Dragon’s Blood sap has also been used for fractures, wounds, inflammation, rheumatism, blood circulation dysfunctions, and cancer. Folk medicine aside, the sap has been used as a varnish for musical instruments. It may be hard to believe, but you may have heard music that was from an instrument that was treated by this healing tree.

Weary upon arrival

The Airways have been consistently open for some time now, but with limited access. While some travelers may have direct contacts with Socotra Island, it is recommended that you find a touring company to help facilitate the visa process. While tourism has been beneficial for the economy, it is still not a massive industry. As of now, the flights are traveling in and out of Cairo on Wednesdays, so be prepared to stay in Socotra for a week. You will also need to book your flight in person, in Cairo. The extra steps might seem a bit egregious, but your stay on Socotra will be worth the effort.

Off the beaten path

While some trails are not worth trekking, Socotra Island is worth the trip. There are interim steps to take, and paperwork to acquire, but the destination is one of a kind. As we all know, the best rewards require sacrifice, and what better reward to have than your own private island inhabited by such biodiverse mystery?

Imagine that your bed is floating through the middle of the Milky Way Galaxy, and you’re sipping from a hot cocoa after a long day out on snow shoes. Your muscles are relaxed as you gaze in panorama, and marvel at the jade majesty of Aurora Borealis that swirls around you from every angle within your periphery. You might see a shooting star streak across the sky and disappear into infinity as the rest of the sky lights your face with an auspicious and welcoming glow. Your arms and legs tingle, but that’s because you’re warming back up after a long day, but the tingling feels almost supernatural this time. It feels like you’re settling back into yourself for the first time in years as the very sky itself heals you.

Losing yourself in the wilderness, and feasting your eyes upon the silent magnificence above you might seem like a lucid dream beyond your wildest imagination, but it’s not too far from the truth. Arctic cabins and glass igloos hide in the wilderness of Finland in cozy atmospheres that will wrap around you like a weighted blanket slowly lulling you into a gentle sleep. What you need to know

Booking: While you can book year-round, the most popular option is during the winter when the sky is the darkest and the stars are the most visible. Autumn offers myriad colors that you may not see during the winter, but the Aurora is visible from late August to late April.

Winter Attire: Some of the best stargazing will take place outside of your dwelling, and it’s encouraged to dress snug and warm. Thermals, gloves, a lined jacket, and comfortable boots are recommended, because comfort will directly influence the enjoyment of the spectacle that awaits you.

Accommodations: Cabins, igloos, and hybrids vary in size and price. Whether you’re looking for an intimate escape, or a family retreat, there are plenty of options for lodging.

What is Aurora Borealis?

The phenomena known as Aurora Borealis is the result of solar wind at high altitudes. This solar wind causes disturbances in the magnetosphere, and creates the illusion of a ghostly green blanket that wraps itself around the sky. The visual stimulation is vibrant, awe inspiring, and all consuming. Pale green and pink are the most common of colors, and they display themselves in magnificent arcs of color and shape. You can easily lose yourself in the spirals as the Aurora Borealis encomposses your surroundings. Roughly translating to “The Dawn of the North,” Aurora Borealis occurs between the twilight and the obscurity of the early morning. It doesn’t matter if you’re an early riser, or a night owl, because the overlapping circle of this Venn Diagram is one of total awe-inspiring beauty, and majestic optical magnificence.

Imagine hiking up a hill in snow shoes, eagerly awaiting your homestead; your body aching, and your soul weary. Maybe you were hunting, or maybe you were just hiking while your neck did all the work gathering in all of the surroundings. As you press on, and on, you catch a glimpse of the horizon that awaits you. You seat yourself on the incline for just a second, and take a sip of water as you look up. What waits for you in the sky at first seems like it’s too good to be true, but as you wipe your weary eyes, you cannot believe what you are seeing. Explosions of color and shapes that you once only thought belonged in long-lost fairy tales and stories innocently youthful exuberance. Your mind, your body, and your soul are rejuvenated by your surroundings. You can finally close your eyes and rest under a sky that you can call your home.

What You’re Missing

We get lost in the day to day of modern society; cars stalled in traffic, lines for lattes, mid day lunch recesses, and that aching desire to escape from the monotony that encapsulates our existence. Traveling to Yosemite in the Winter

Travel to Yosemite in the winter and it will seem like a completely different place than it does in the warmer months. This is a great time of year to visit Yosemite if you don’t love big crowds and a great opportunity to take in the wildlife in the snowy wilderness. Traveling to Yosemite in the Spring

After a long winter, taking a trip to Yosemite in the spring can be a great way to feel refreshed and enjoy some beautiful wildlife (and plant life) in Yosemite. In general, crowds are smaller in spring than they are in summer and fall. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you can typically take advantage of popular fall activities, like camp fires and summer fun such as biking and horseback riding. Pros

This is a great time to visit the waterfalls such as Vernal, Bridalveil and Nevada falls. During this time of year, the dogwoods will be in peak bloom as well, making it a truly picturesque experience.

Cons

While many areas of the park are undoubtedly beautiful in the spring, there are some areas that won’t open up until the very end of spring. In fact Glacier Point and Tioga areas won’t open until the end of May.

While the idea of a summer vacation always has a nice ring to it, if your holiday plans include Yosemite, this isn’t the best time of year to visit. Yosemite gets very crowded during this time of year, and if you are planning on soaking up the wilderness, taking photos or finding some peace and quiet, this isn’t the time of year to do it. The crowds. It is also notoriously difficult to find accommodations or places in the campgrounds during this time of year.

Traveling to Yosemite in the Fall

If you are looking for our top pic on the absolute best time to visit Yosemite, the fall takes the cake. This is the perfect blend of the peace and quiet of the winter and the access to activities in the summer.

Pros

This is the perfect blend of good weather and fewer visitors and the park stays accessible throughout most of the season. Try art classes, hiking or rock climbing during this time of year and take in some beautiful fall foliage. There are also a lot of programs and events hosted throughout the fall in the park as well.

Cons

There aren’t many cons of visiting Yosemite in the fall. However, if taking in the waterfalls is on your bucket list, then this isn’t the best time to do it. You will have better luck during other seasons.

No matter which season you choose to visit Yosemite, there are a few things that always hold true—the price. The park entry is $20 per car and your pass is good for seven days, plenty of time to explore this beautiful national park. Individuals age 62 and older are also eligible for the Golden Age National Parks Pass which is just $10. Not in a car? If you live close and plan on making repeat visits to the park, you can get one of the annual passes. The first is a Yosemite Year Pass for $40. For just $50 you can get an Annual National Parks Pass to visit all of the national parks across the country. Not in a car? Not a problem. Anyone who wants to enter the park by foot, motorcycle or horse can enter the premises for seven days for just $10. No matter when, how long or how you prefer to visit, experiencing this park is truly a must for anyone who wants to get in touch with nature.

The semi-nomadic Korowai Tribe has a detailed history that dates back centuries.

However, there are even more reasons why this tribe, which historically inhabitants the jungle of Papau, garners so much attention. For hundreds of years, this tribe has lived a truly self-sufficient existence, however, the tribe may be on the precipice of major change. As the impact of our modern culture creeps in, and the Indonesian government expands their reach, the Korowai Tribe may face changes that completely uproot their existence. For now, the Korowai Tribe and other tribes that live deep in the jungle are left alone under Indonesian law, although recent changes have threatened that peace. For the time being, the tribes continue to live the way they have for centuries—high up in the trees.

These houses are sometimes built over water or the jungle floor, and have different types of ladders that allow for easy access to the structurer above. You will typically find these individual settlements far away and completely isolated even from other members of the tribe. Experiencing the sky-high Korowai Tribe homes is truly something that must be seen to be believed, but why does this Indonesian tribe choose to live only in tree houses?

According to some clan chiefs, the idea started out of a commitment to protection. This tribe believes that evil spirits live on the ground, and that staying in these tree homes can help protect people from these evil spirits. These tree houses have other practical benefits as well. They are located well above flood-water levels and have defensive benefits. They can keep rival clans at bay and prevent them from capturing members of the Korowai Tribe. Many of the tribes feel as thought their women and children are at risk for being stolen for slavery or by cannibal tribes.

The Design Behind the Korowai Tribe Homes

Most Korowai settlements have a mix of lower and higher tree houses. The low homes are built around Wanbom Trees, or Banyan Trees, which aren’t as high but have a thick “main pole” in the middle for support. This trunk will go through the middle of the home. Some of the higher tree houses are actually built on top of living trees in the settlement. These houses are actually placed on top of the canopy of the tree.

No matter where on the tree these homes are built, they are constructed entirely from materials that come from around the jungle. Tribe members are able to build sturdy frames from the branches from surrounding trees and typically use Sago Palm bark to make the walls and floor boards inside the home. As for the roof? Tribe members will actually weave together large leaves and rattan bindings to create a durable roof that keeps these homes well protected.

When you are physically inside the homes, you can actually feel them moving, similar to the feeling of a boat out on water. Even slight breezes through the jungle can sway the structure, but overall these high-flying tree houses are extremely durable and weather resistant.

How Long Do These Homes Last?

What is most impressive is that these homes can be built in as little as one to two days. After these homes are built, they typically last anywhere from three to five years, with the occasional repair needed. Typically, when its time to build a new house, the tribe will determine whether or not they can build a house in the same clearing, or if the clan needs to move to an area with better resources and hunting territories.

Hunting is a very important part of choosing a location for these homes. The tribe primarily hunts pigs with bows and arrows, cassowaries with ropes or they will fish using handmade basket-traps, bows or poison. They also use dogs for hunting as well. Every so often, the tribe will make a decision to move for the betterment of their clan as they continue to value and hold true to their unique way of life. While you may never have the opportunity to experience life up among the trees like the Korowai Tribe, you can take in the beauty of photos of these stunning homes and see the magnificent design that goes into these houses up in the trees.

The Korowai Tribe is made up of a close-knit society (approximately 3,000) and strong family bonds, as the entire community is forced to work together in order to survive. One of the ways they are able to survive in this thrive in this sense jungle is by living in their truly awe-inspiring tree houses. Located high up in the tree canopies of this jungle, the Korowai Tribe has mastered the art of relying on their environment in order to live off their land and stay protected while they do it. These tree-bound homes are some of the most unique and historically-significant homes in the world. They are also piece of architecture that the average person will never have the opportunity to see in person. However, a better understanding of these home and the tribes that inhabit them can open you up to a world that is truly unlike any other village in the world.

Inside the Korowai Tribe Settlement

In most situations, the Korowai Tribe will live small, isolated groups or settlements. Typically, each of these settlements has approximately five individual tree houses. Depending on the area of the jungle and the potential risks and environment in the area, the homes can range in height from 8 to 12 meters to as high as 45 meters.

Located off the west coast of Nicaragua, Popoyo may be a trek to get to, but it is one that is more than worth it once you reach this surfing mecca. Popoyo is a must-visit destination because it provides consistent waves nearly all year round and it has waves for all types of surfers and skill levels. Along this beach you will find other popular surfing spots including the Stoneys, Playa Colorado, Plays Santa and the Playgrounds. Not sure if you are up for the challenge? There is also Beginner Bay. This spot, located on the southern portion of the beach has low, rolling waves where you a perfect your skills.

J-Bay

More formally known as Jeffreys Bay, J-Bay is often hailed as one of the surfing capitals in the world. Located off the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa, this a must-see destination for any experienced surfer. There are multiple sections to explore in Jeffreys Bay, including several incredible point breaks, in fact there are ten different sections to choose from—each with their own types of waves. Visiting Jeffreys Bay isn’t only a great place to catch some surf, but it is also an amazing spot to visit as well. There are lots of dining and hotel options nearby. Just make sure you’re prepared for the water conditions! The water can be cold and filled with sharks, so be ready for the water.

Uluwatu

If you are an advanced surfer in need of a bit of a challenge, then Uluwatu should be on your list. You can visit this beach, on the tip of the Bukit Peninsula, most of the year and enjoy great surfing multiple seasons in a row. This beach can get pretty crowded, and it isn’t suitable for beginners, but for those who can hack it, it is one of the best places in the world to get out and surf. Uluwatu is actually home to five different peaks, each with its own unique types of waves. These peaks are: Temples, The Peak, The Bombie, Outside Corner and Racetracks. Our recommendation? Check out Racetracks if you are looking for longer waves and a few barrels while you surf.

Siargao is often hailed as the “surfing capital of the Philippines,” and for good reason. This large island is not only beautiful to look at but boasts over thirty different popular surf breaks. This is an affordable place to visit and surf and you can enjoy plenty of waves with minimal crowds, which definitely adds to the experience. Siargao is also home to Cloud 9, which is not only one of the most popular places on the island, but often hailed as one of the best breaks in the world. Plus, if you are particular about your water conditions while surfing, you can enjoy warm weather all year round in Siargao. Just make sure you do your research before you book your plane tickets. While there are lots of areas to surf, the surging can be inconsistent, so make sure you try to go during peak season.

For centuries, the Nenets have traveled across the Siberian arctic in one of the most challenging feats humanly possible. The Nenets are nomadic reindeer herders. In fact, they are the last tribe of their kind that herds reindeer in this way. The reindeer play a critical role in the Nenets culture.

In fact, they rely heavily on their reindeer for everything from tools and clothing, to food and transportation. They take these herds of reindeer with them along the same ancient migration routes they always have. Each Nenet not only has a responsibility to help care for the herd along their journey, but they are each given a sacred reindeer, which is not harnessed or slaughtered until it is unable to walk. It is one of the many traditions that the tribe maintains along their journey.

However, now that the modern world knowns that this peninsula they travel on is home to one of the largest gas reserves in the planet, things have started to change along this path. There is now new infrastructure in place, and the Nenets’ migration routes are threatened by this infrastructure. Roads are difficult for reindeer to cross and the pollution from this development impacts the quality of the pastures the reindeer migrate to.

The pollution and climate change is also impacting the vegetation in the tundra, which is the only source of food for the reindeer along their journey. Every year, this group of indigenous people moves their herds from summer pastures in the north, to winter pastures in the south. As they travel to the arctic circle, this group, and their herd of reindeer are faced with unpredictable landscapes and temperatures that can drop as low as -50C. In addition to walking and sledding through these long stretches of land, they must also cross the fifth largest river in the world right as it freezes.

However, this tribe isn’t just about their struggles or difficult journey. They are a tribe that is characterized by their bold and beautiful culture. They are also a tribe with a difficult history, and one that saw them overcome early Russian colonization and the threats of Stalin’s regime. However, even after all they have overcome, the modern-day threats of climate change and oil and gas development is poised to provide them with their greatest challenge yet. In a recent article from Maptia, writers Alegra Ally and Kim Frank take a deep dive into the women of this indigenous tribe, highlighting the day-to-day excursions of tribe member Lena and her family. Using a series of field journal entries, the article details what it is like to travel across the freezing tundra as the family tries to migrate to winter grazing lands, reindeer in tow.

They must cover themselves in swathes of fur to keep frost bite at bay, travel along some of the most dangerous frozen lands in the world, and they stay only in small tents known as “chums” when it is time to rest. The women along for the journey help create warm homes out of these tents, pack and unpack their sleds filled with supplies, and keep the family fed, healthy and happy along the journey—even the mothers who are caring for small children or expecting children of their own.

This is just the story they tell in their piece. While detailing a 50 day journey with the Nenet, they tell Lena’s tale, the tale of a woman who is not only trying to survive with her family on their journey, but who is on the brink of giving birth as well. As she navigates the challenges presented in her trek along with the attempt to safely deliver her baby and return back to her tribe, you see the intricacies that come with making this type of life work. It is a fascinating look at the sheer strength it takes not only traveling in such an extreme environment, but in maintaining this tradition amidst a changing climate.

The passage is part of a larger, photography book that showcases images from this amazing journey. It is riddled with stories about the impact of extreme cold, the physical responsibilities of taking a journey like this and how rapid climate change and industrial development are starting to pose a threat to this tribe’s way of life. In this journey alone, travel is delayed by weeks because not enough snow has fallen to take the journey. And every year, it only has potential to get worse.

The photos of this tribe and of their journey in the arctic truly has to be seen to be believed. They continue to hold family values and traditions, while navigating the unpredictable tundra ahead of them—in a journey that is truly awe-inspiring to behold. They make their way through areas of the arctic that have rarely even been photographed on an annual journey that is nothing more than a day’s work for this nomadic clan.

Every year, the tribe, travels to “Yamal” which means “the end of the world” in their native language. They go through this excruciating process year after year, whether or not there is a global pandemic, whether or not they are with child and whether or not the weather cooperates. It is part of their being. And once they have done that, once they have found the grazing lands for their herd, their journey isn’t done. They will trave again, face extreme conditions again and move again as their ancestors always have. Their nomadic life means their journey is never complete so they power through as they continue to keep their tribe’s traditions alive.
